What happens at the end of a DAS in Scotland?

Understanding what happens when a DAS finishes

A Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) can complete in one of two ways, either the final monthly repayment is made as per the original arrangement, or a lump-sum payment is made in order to satisfy the outstanding balance remaining.

When a Debt Arrangement Scheme successfully completes, meaning all payments have been made towards the plan as agreed, the following happens:

  • All debts included in the Debt Arrangement Scheme are settled. This means you have fully repaid the amount that you owe, and you have no further obligations towards these debts. Furthermore, your creditors can no longer chase you for any monies associated with these historical debts.
  • All interest, fees, and charges are waived. All interest and late payment fees will be frozen when you enter into a DAS. Following successful completion, all of these frozen charges will be waived meaning you will not be required to pay anything else towards these debts.

Understanding what happens when a DAS finishes

  • Your details will be removed from the DAS register. When you enter into a DAS, you will be added to the DAS register, an open list of any individual currently part of the scheme. When you make your final payment, your appointed DAS Administrator will apply to have your name removed from this register.
  • You can begin to rebuild your credit rating. A DAS will remain on your credit file for at least six years; this will show that you have been making reduced payments towards your debts. Once your DAS completes, you should make sure that your credit file is updated to reflect the fact that your debts are cleared. While the reduced payments you made will remain on your credit file until enough time has passed for them to drop off, you can now focus on the future and rebuilding your credit worthiness.

What happens if my DAS ends because of a cancellation?

In some instances, a DAS may end automatically due to it being revoked or cancelled. This may happen if three monthly payments towards your DAS have been missed without prior approval, if you enter into an alternative debt solution such as a Trust Deed or Sequestration, or if it is found that you provided incorrect or misleading information during the DAS application process.

If a DAS ends in cancellation rather than successful completion, you will still be responsible for repaying any debt which remains unpaid at this point. Any interest or charges which were frozen as part of the DAS will also be backdated and added onto your outstanding debt amount.

Depending on your financial position, you may be required to enter into an alternative insolvency solution to deal with the remaining debt if you have not already done so.
