Scotland’s Youth Employment Rate Highest in 10 Years

August 14, 2015

Levels of employment among young people living in Scotland were recorded as being at their highest official rate since 2005 during the second quarter of this year.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that the number of young men and women in work across Scotland grew by roughly 20,000 in the three months prior to the end of June this year.

That increase means there were close to 363,000 Scots between the ages of 16 and 24 in work around the country in the second quarter of the year, a figure which hasn’t been bettered since the same period of 2005.

With employment levels rising, jobless numbers among young Scots decreased by around 7,000 to reach a rate of 14 per cent, which hasn’t been lower since the second quarter of 2008, according to the ONS.

Scotland’s decline in the number of jobless young people bucks a broader trend across all age groups in the UK with the ONS reporting an overall rise in unemployment of 25,000 from the first to second quarters of 2015.

“In the three months between April and June 2015 20,000 young people got jobs – 20,000 young people in work who weren’t before,” said Roseanna Cunningham, Scotland’s fair work, skills and training secretary.

“These are encouraging signs of an improving economic landscape in Scotland, following on from official statistics last month showing the economy grew by 0.6 per cent in the first three months of this year.

“We will continue to work with employers and all other interested parties to ensure more of our young men and women get in to work and stay in work.”

Scotland’s economy is currently outpacing expansion across the UK. The overall rate of unemployment among all work-age individuals in Scotland was down by roughly 13,000 to reach 5.6 per cent across the country.

According to the ONS, there were around 1.85 million people aged 16 or over who were seeking and available for work throughout the UK, with almost another 9 million Britons not in and not looking for work of any kind.
