Sturgeon Announces £12 Million of Extra Funding to Help Flood-affected Scots

January 12, 2016

First minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that the Scottish government will be distributing an extra £12 million to victims of the recent floods around the country.

Sturgeon has said that the £12 million is in addition to the £4 million already allocated to helping flood victims in different parts of Scotland, with plans in place to distribute £1,500 grants to every household, charity or business affected by the flooding.

The aim is to support and facilitate the recovery efforts of those affected by the floods, which have caused widespread property damage in many parts of Scotland and which swept in along with severe storms at the turn of the year.

Businesses that have been left unable to carry out their work or deliver their services in recent days as a result of the flooding situation could potentially access £3,000 grants to offset some of the consequences of the damage that they’ve suffered.

Funding for these grants is to be provided by the Scottish government but will be distributed by local authorities around the country.

“The Scottish government is committed to providing the support needed to help individuals, business and communities to recover from the damage caused by this unprecedented severe weather,” Scotland’s first minister said in a statement.

“We do not yet have confirmation of consequentials coming from UK government flood funds – however, now that the picture of those who need support is clearer, the Scottish government is acting now to make sure that the people who need help get it.”

In addition to the monies now intended for distribution by local councils in response to the recent floods, the government is making £5 million available to local authorities for the purposes of repairing damage done to their local infrastructure by the floods.

Property owners throughout the areas affected by flooding in recent days have been advised to contact their local authorities in order to access the funding that’s being made available.
