Glasgow’s George Square to be Transformed into Football Stadium for Homeless World Cup
April 20, 2016
George Square in central Glasgow is set to be radically transformed into a football stadium that will host the next Homeless World Cup event in July of this year.
An artists’ impression of how the square will come to look in a few months’ time shows a series of football pitches and lots of outdoor seating for spectators.
Indeed, seating for as many as 3,500 spectators around three separate football pitches are planned for the city centre site when the event takes place between July 10th and July 16th 2016.
A total of 48 men’s and 16 women’s teams from around the world are expected to participate in the contest, which is designed primarily to raise awareness of homelessness and to encourage homeless people to change their own lives for the better.
Hopes among organisers are that Glasgow will be the “most inspiring place on the planet” for the duration of the event, which is expected to draw close to 100,000 supporters to its matches.
“George Square is a unique location to host this year’s Homeless World Cup,” said Mel Young, who co-created the concept of the Homeless World Cup.
“Our mission is to bring the tournament to the centre of the cities we visit, because homelessness isn’t something that should be tucked away. We need to talk about it, therefore being here was very important.”
Plans are for several smaller pitches to be set up in George Square, along with a “main pitch” that will have spectator seating available on all four sides.
Organisers have said that planning to stage the event in George Square was not straightforward given the number of historic monuments within it but there is plenty of optimism that the effort will be worthwhile.
“The nature of the site means it’s an interesting build which has involved a real multi-agency approach, particularly with our colleagues at Glasgow Life, but we’re confident that when the wrappers come off for real in July, Glasgow will be amazed – and ready to join a real celebration,” Mel Young said as the artists’ impressions were released.
